Abstract. The distribution of periodic orbits of dynamical systems (particularly hyperbolic flows) has a long history. I will discuss the model case of a hyperbolic manifold and explain how one obtains various refinements on the asymptotic distribution law of closed geodesics. The refinements are associated with homological restrictions (how many closed geodesics have homology restricted in a special set). The methods are spectral.
