GEOMETRISK TOPOLOGI D FALL 02
TERM PAPERS
BOOK
I do not want to follow a specific book. I will cover fundamental material from
several books and articles.
LECTURES
During the first half of the course I present basic examples and theories in geometric topology. All material will be presented during the lectures and lecture notes will be distributed. The second half will be reserved for seminars by
the participants.
EXAM
Exercises will be distributed. During the second half of the course each participant is also expected to give a seminar presenting the basic ideas
of a fundamental research article. A list of interesting articles will be distributed at the beginning of the course. Many of the most important articles are in German so a German-English (Swedish) dictionary is recommended.
All articles are difficult reading.
BACKGROUND MATERIAL
The best and most useful first source for anyone interested in the fundamentals of
geometric topology
is still the classic
H. SEIFERT UND
 W. THRELFALL, LEHRBUCH DER TOPOLOGIE,
published 1934.
Seifert was a most outstanding topologist. A brief presentation of him and his collaboration with Threlfall can be found at
University of St Andrews, Scotland. The book is available at
AMS BOOKSTORE.
It is not necessary to have a copy of the book in order to follow the course.
A review of the latest developments can be found at
 Profile of William P. Thurston.
