My mathematical brother Ragnar Sigurðsson took the above photos of Mikael, his mathematical nephew, in 2008. The one to the left shows him lecturing at Institut Mittag-Leffler in the spring of 2008; in the one on the right he is at the Nordan meeting in Mariehamn, 2008. The photos above and those below taken by him are made available with Ragnar's permission.
Mikael Passare was born in Västerås, Sweden, on January 01, 1959. He died from a sudden cardiac arrest in Oman in the evening of September 15, 2011.
He was a professor at Stockholm University; earlier he was Department Head and Chairman of the Swedish National Committee for Mathematics. At the time of his death he was President of the Swedish Mathematical Society.
More about his life can be found in the obituaries in English and Swedish that I have written.
1. Obituary in English: Mikael Passare 1959—2011 (22 pages; with references and a list of his publications and seminar talks).
2. Abridged obituary in English: Mikael Passare 1959—2011 (4 pages; without references). Accepted for publication in The Newsletter of the European Mathematical Society, June 2012.
3. His mathematical research and some questions he left behind form the topic of a paper entitled Questions inspired by Mikael Passare's mathematics (18 pages).
4. The International Science Programme (ISP) celebrated its fiftieth anniversary on September 26, 2011. About two hundred persons participated, among them many from Africa. Mikael was a member of the Board of ISP, and the celebration started with a presentation of him and his activtity for mathematics in Africa. Two texts were made available, a longer one and a shorter one.
5. Presentation on May 11, 2012, at the 16th Nordan Conference in Kiruna: Questions inspired by Mikael Passare's mathematics. Condensed version with four screens on each page.
6. On September 28, Tom Britton organized a meeting at Stockholm University to honor Mikael. There were between 140 and 150 persons there. Eight of them gave short speeches to honor Mikael Passare.
7. There is a short obituary in Swedish, submitted to four newspapers and published in somewhat shortened form in Dagens Nyheter 2011-10-14 with a correction 2011-10-15, and with almost no changes in Svenska Dagbladet 2011-10-16.
8. The Swedish Mathematical Society published an obituary in Swedish, Mikael Passare 1959—2011, on 2011-10-25 (19 pages).
